Lay Out For The Ball
In sports where players use their hands to hold a ball of any kind, this
phrase comes up often:

This wasn't a kick that just sailed over the crossbar; it nearly sailed
out of the stadium. The goalie laid out for the ball that was roughly 40
feet above him and when he got up he didn't seem to celebrate too much.
Maybe it's because his guess on where Soriano was going was as bad as
Soriano's kick.
Which seems to mean he stretched for the ball. But I cannot find a
definition of "lay out" with this meaning. Could this usage be slangy or
specific to sports?
